Lombok is an island in the West Nusa Tenggare province East of Bali. The island is roughly circular and is approx. 70 km across with a total area of around 415 km2. The capital of the island is Mataram and is directly the largest city. There are over 3 million living in Lombok island.
The people living in Lombok were Sasak. These were overruled by the Balinese people and from 1895 the Netherlands East Indies were leading the island. After the Indonesian independency President Suharto gave the New Order and stability and and development were priority but this is not developed as in Bali and Java. Tourism did not grow extremely yet in Lombok but is starting to grow again.
In Lombok, the Mount Rinjani is dominating the view, this is the second highest volcano in Indonesia which rises to 3.726 meters. The volcano and its crater lake are protected by the Gunung Rinaja National Park. As a trip you can walk up the volcano but prepare yourself well for this tough hike. The highlands of Lombok are forest clad and mostly undeveloped. The lowlands are highly cultivated and grow rice, soybeans, coffee, tobacco, cotton, cinnamon, cacao, cloves, cassava, corn, coconuts, bananas and vanilla.
